Acné Felino: Causas, Síntomas y Tratamientos

Do you know what feline acne is?

Feline acne is a common skin disorder that can affect cats of all ages and breeds indiscriminately.
This skin condition is characterized by the appearance of small bumps, blackheads, and scabs on the underside of the muzzle (chin). Although acne is not dangerous for your cat's health, it can be uncomfortable and painful, and even cause secondary infections if not treated promptly.
In this #PetTuesday, we explore the causes, symptoms, and treatments.

What causes feline acne?

Although the exact cause of acne is unknown, there are several genetic and environmental factors that can lead to this condition:

  • Excess sebum: Sebum is a mixture of lipids that helps keep skin and fur hydrated and protected. They play an important role in keeping skin supple and preventing excessive growth of microorganisms.
In cats, sebaceous glands are found in various parts of the body, but are particularly abundant on the chin and at the base of the tail. When they produce excess sebum or become clogged, they can cause problems such as feline acne.
  • Stress: Felines are very prone to stress crises, which weakens their immune system. This can alter the health of their skin and increase acne on their body.
  • Poor hygiene: although cats groom themselves constantly, your kitten may need help cleaning their chin or mouth after eating because it can be a difficult place for them to clean. You can use special wet wipes for pets.

  • Allergies: your kitten may be allergic to a cleaning product you are using at home or even to their food bowl. Many are allergic to plastic products, so we recommend using stainless steel or ceramic feeders.
  • Bacterial infections: bacteria can accumulate in the area, worsening the problem. In these cases, we recommend going to a veterinarian so they can provide the correct medication.
  • Hair loss: once the chin area has scabs, hair may fall out in that spot.

Also, there are kittens of certain breeds that are more sensitive to certain environmental factors, such as albinos (white cats), as they are more sensitive to sunlight and aerosols. Therefore, they need pet-safe sunscreen and should be cleaned with warm water or natural matico water.
And there are long-haired kittens, who are more prone to having small food residues stuck in their chin. Clean them daily with wet wipes.

What symptoms will the kitten have?

  • Yellowish spots on their chin, if it's just starting, and black if they are already drying.
  • Redness and inflammation
  • Scabs
  • Lots of itching, where they will scratch or rub frequently.

What treatment will the kitten need?

All treatment varies according to the severity of the acne. Generally, you can follow these steps:

  • After your kitten eats, clean their mouth and chin with wet wipes. Another essential cleaner is an antiseptic one that the veterinarian will recommend. Follow the steps for this cleaner exactly as they appear on the product.
  • Change of food and/or water bowl. As detailed above, your kitten may be allergic to plastic products, so opt for changing to a stainless steel and/or ceramic bowl.
  • Stress control. Ideally, they should always be in a quiet environment, with anti-stress toys such as those with Catnip and/or appropriate scratchers for their height and age.
  • Medications: Take them to the veterinarian for the appropriate medications and follow them strictly.
  • Diet change: you can include healthier foods, avoiding processed and high-fat ones. Wet foods are an excellent option to keep them hydrated.

Can acne reappear on their chin?

In some cases, feline acne will become a recurrent skin condition. To extend the period between outbreaks, maintain regular cleaning and grooming. If it is very frequent, visit the veterinarian for effective treatment.

With the right measures, your kitten can have healthy skin and feel much better.
