¿Cómo proteger a tu gatito durante un sismo? Consejo claves antes, durante y después del episodio geológico.

Each time, there are more tremors affecting our country and there is constantly doubt about a possible next earthquake, so it is advisable to be prepared for these episodes, especially if we have furry friends at home.

In this #PetTuesday we will help you with tips on what to do before, during and after a strong earthquake that your kitten may feel and get scared by.

Before the earthquake:

  • First things first, if you live in an apartment, whether there is an earthquake or not, it is important that the windows have safety nets to prevent jumps or falls from great heights.
  • Have a leash and harness ready in a place near the door, or in another strategic location so that you don't delay putting it on and thus protecting them at all times.
  • It is recommended to have an emergency backpack for yourself, with provisions, water, flashlights, and in this, add a kit for your furry friend, with small bags of their favorite food, wet food, a bowl, a copy of their vaccination card, and photos in case they get lost.
Also, don't forget their favorite toy to minimize the stress that the earthquake and everyone being nervous will entail.

  • Lastly, have a carrier backpack or bag handy to take them wherever you go and thus avoid losing them.

During the earthquake:

  • Leave them in the carrier backpack or bag and cover them with a blanket.
  • Avoid holding them in your arms for fear that they might hurt you or run away from home.
  • If you don't have time to put them in the carrier, put their harness on to prevent them from running away.
  • If there are more people at home, ask them to close the windows so your furry friend doesn't run out, in case you still can't put the harness on them.
  • If you don't have a carrier backpack or bag, some veterinarians recommend leaving them in a closet or enclosed space while the earthquake lasts, always for the same reason, to prevent them from running away. Clearly, the place where you leave them should not be a place that can easily fall during the earthquake so that it does not harm the kitten.

After the earthquake:

  • Keep them wrapped in a blanket so that their stress and fear gradually decrease. Ideally, the person holding them in their arms or in the carrier should be their favorite human, so that the furry friend feels confident and comfortable amidst all the stress caused by this geological episode.
  • Kittens are a neophobic species, so they may have behavioral changes, either aggressive or remaining immobile. Always provide emotional stability, transmitting tranquility and security.

Note: If you feel fear or panic during a strong earthquake, we recommend entrusting the care of your furry friend to another person who is calmer and can protect them.

Also, we ask that if, after an earthquake, you find a lost pet, you can offer it temporary shelter and food and then take it to a shelter or post it on social media so that its family can find it.
